Caister's New Lifeboat 2005

Caister lifeboat Joins the Day of Honour For Brave Seamen. April 23rd 2005

On Saturday Caister Lifeboat joined a supporting collection of lifeboats from Gorleston and Hemsby in recognition of the work of the Air Sea Rescue Unit based at Gorleston. The day marked the work of the ASRU at Baker street which operated from 1939 to 1959 saving some 800 lives. The RAF unveiled plaques to commemorate the bravery and work of the station in memory of the 16 lives lost during operations, which included 2 American airmen who were killed when the launch that went to save them came under fire. The plaques were organised by the Air Sea Rescue Marine Craft Sections Club with contributions from the National Lottory and local businesses. The comemoration reached its highlight at 3.00 p.m. when spectators were treated to a flypast of the Lancaster escorted by the Spitfire and Hurricane of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Pictures below illustrate the day.
