Callout to Arco Dyke 29th June 2006

At 11.00 hrs on 6th July 2006 the Caister Lifeboat launched to assist the Dutch dredger Arco Dyke. The dredger which was gathering sand and ballast from the sea bed 5 miles off Bacton, stopped when it was found to have caught a World War II practice bomb. Caister lifeboat was tasked by HM Coastguards to enforce a one mile exclusion zone around the vessel which moved to meet the lifeboat off Sea Palling. The exclusion continued until Royal Navy bomb disposal experts had freed the bomb and safely disposed of it. This was the second occasion in the past twelve months that the dredger has been unfortunate in uncovering an explosive device and serves to highlight the case that a great deal of unexploded ordnance remains around our coastline, from several periods of our history.

The Lifeboat returned to station at 14.30 hrs.
